Five Basic Quilts for Beginners that will have you wanting to sew!
My sewing skills are really pretty basic (like 6th grade home ec. basic) Although I don’t know a lot, I was still able to make 5 different quilts last year that I am pretty proud of! If you are looking for a simple quilt to make, here are the 5 that I was able to make in 2013 (with clickable images):
This last pirate quilt may possibly be able to be classified as “intermediate” because it did involve piecing, and quilting in a zig-zag pattern, but the stitches were still straight and it was still very basic. I would say as a very beginner I wouldn’t attempt a twin size quilt like I did, but a crib or doll quilt would bring it back into the “beginner” category.
One of the things that I would like to accomplish in 2014 is to sew a quilt for our future daughters bedroom. and I’d like to stretch myself a bit and sew something a little more complex than the quilts I made last year. Maybe learn how to do a meandering quilt stitch? Maybe use something like chenille or minky? Maybe sew something more than just straight lines? Anyone have any suggestions for the “almost intermediate” quilter?
I hit up my local library and they have many many quilt design books…Most have the straight stitch but by the end some designs are just tooo awesome to care if its straight or not 8) Im attempting to make a NFL rag quilt next….then some pink n black…gotta get to work on those Christmas presents lol
