Hey guys! So sorry I didn’t share my post last week for the “New Year New Room” challenge! Between my kids having an extra day off of school, taking a quick road trip, and working on our bathroom I didn’t write a single post last week! Today I’m going to share the post I meant to share last week and it’s a good one! This is how to DIY black windows without painting or replacing!
This house has nice vinyl windows that are in great shape, but for some reason the previous homeowner chose TAN windows. Either white or black would have been great, but tan?!? I’m a HUGE fan of black windows, but everything I read said it isn’t recommended to paint them. Then I came up with the brilliant idea to try and get the look of black windows with electrical tape! Yep… electrical tape!
I bought three rolls in three widths on Amazon. I also used a sharp knife and scissors for this DIY.
Then it was as simple as applying the tape to the window and cutting off the excess. The hardest part was being sure to not let it get bulky where it needs to pass when it opens and closes. To do four windows I used all of the tape I ordered and it took me about 3 hours. All of the windows still open and close just fine, I just have to be gentle and not jam them open.

I REALLY love the way these look in black and it’s only made me want to figure out a permanent way to paint our windows black. It’s a cheap fix and it probably won’t last forever, but I’m still happy that I did it. Honestly I don’t think it would be worth the time and energy to do ALL the windows in our house so that’s why I’m going to keep researching how to paint them.
If you’re a renter, or you’re afraid of painting your vinyl windows, this is a cheap and easy fix that will get you the look of modern black windows. Make sure you come back tomorrow for the reveal of the master bedroom! Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope that this post inspired you to tackle a simple DIY to create a space you love! Sometimes it’s as simple as $20, 3 hours, and 3 rolls of electrical tape!

It’s a really smart idea, I never tried because I always thought it wouldn’t last long…but it looks so good, makes me wanna try it!
Thanks a ton! I’ll let you know how it holds up. We don’t open our windows a ton but I think if you did that it might not hold up as well.
I’ve been wanting to do this forever! Love this tutorial!
Yup, you are officially a genius! Love black windows! I wish there was a way to cover the grids (or muntins- totally had to look up the real word😂) on windows. This is a great Diy, thanks for sharing Jess!
Totally! Yeah covering the grids would be tough. Glad you love this DIY! I’m trying to decide if I should tackle it on other windows too or not.
