I am SO SO SO excited to share this post with you! Today is the first day of the One Room Challenge! Basically, tons of bloggers decide to take on one room and completely transform it in six weeks. I attempted to participate in the fall round, but after getting diagnosed with skin cancer and going through an unexpected move I didn’t make much progress. Now we are settled in our new house and our master bedroom is begging for some attention. I’ve got big plans to turn it into a modern master bedroom retreat.OK, so no judging while I walk you through our pitiful master bedroom. When you walk in the door this is what you see. Even though it’s far from finished there’s a few things that I do really like about the room. I love the grey headboard and black bedding. I also really love the Mid Century nightstands and dresser that I picked up at the thrift store a few years ago. I also love all of the light that the three windows let in.
Over on the other side of the room I love that we have two large closets. Ok, enough of the good, now let’s talk about the issues with this room. I’ll start with the ceiling fan. Because we don’t have air conditioning a ceiling fan is a necessity. The problem with this particular fan is that it is not my style at all. I’m also not a huge fan of the closet wall. These bi-fold doors are best at collecting dust and preventing us from accessing the sides of our closets. I’ve got some big ideas to modernize and give more functionality to the closets.
Over to the opposite corner of the room I’ve got a whole different set of issues. Let’s start with the lack of privacy and exposed windows. Thankfully we live in the woods! Those old curtain rods were hung far too low and too far in. I’m planning on hanging new curtains high and wide. I also don’t like how crowded this corner is with the Ikea chair.
This baby blue paint and 90’s white carpet is another one of our issues. It’s got stains and permanent furniture indentations from the past owners furniture. It also doesn’t match any of the carpet in the rest of the house. Our first big projects will involve painting and laying new wood flooring in here!
Our final major issue is the door that is ALWAYS in the way. As you can see you have to move the door to walk around the bed. When it’s all the way open it blocks the entrance to the bathroom. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve slammed into the door when trying to walk to the bathroom in the middle of the night. For this challenge we’re going to figure out how to put an out-swing door here, rather than the current in-swing.
So in summary, in the next six weeks I’ve got some BIG plans for this bedroom. Paint, flooring, closet construction, door construction, electrical, and then the fun part… decor! I’m planning on using greys, greens, corals, and some metallic accents. I’m working with a few sponsors and I’ve ordered a few new things as well! I’d love if you would follow along in our progress over the next six weeks! Hopefully on May 12th I’ll have a beautiful master bedroom to reveal! **UPDATE** Click here to see the reveal!
