We’ve Got Flooring! Laminate Floors that Look Like Real Wood

July 30, 2015 By BrightGreenDoor

Yes you read that right, our Retro Ranch has floors! *This post contains affiliate links* These laminate acacia floors to be exact. After our disastrous time we were having living in the basement, getting the upstairs livable became our #1 priority. This wasn’t our first go around with laying laminate flooring, I actually wrote a post about our tips and tricks for laying laminate. Thankfully we had some wonderful friends show up to help on flooring day. Amazingly we were able to lay ALL of the flooring in one day!

Laminate and Engineered Flooring Installation Tips

Here it is in the kitchen. Obviously the kitchen is far from finished, but I love how having one floor throughout the house makes every room feel bigger.

We chose a laminate that has knots and a hand scraped look to make it look more like real hardwood. Laminate is a super affordable option, but I think it can look really fake and cheap if you don’t choose a higher end laminate. We were able to buy all of the flooring and underlayment, and get it shipped for under $3000.

Here is our dining space. If you look close you can see the ridges of the “hand scraped” look. I actually like the way the wood tones of the Craigslist Cabinets look with the flooring.Laminate Flooring-9 Laminate Flooring-13

My wonderful friend Kari came over and helped with the cleanup after we got all the floors laid. I’ve always use this product on my flooring and I’ve always been happy with it. Laminate Flooring-7

You can see the painters tape marking where the vents are. That was so that while we were laying the floors if we forgot to cut the vent we could find it. I’m notorious for rolling out the underlayment and forgetting to cut the opening for the vents.Laminate Flooring-12

Here is our master. I painted all of the walls Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Grey. It’s the exact same color I used in the Auction House. I liked it so much I just couldn’t help myself.Laminate FlooringLaminate Flooring-2

Here is the boys room. It’s come a long ways from where it started with floral wallpaper.Laminate Flooring-5

Here’s a closeup of the flooring. I’m really thankful we went for lighter flooring than last time. It does a good job of hiding dust and dirt, and although I want clean floors it feels good to not always see the dust.Laminate Flooring-10

Here’s the girl room. We still hadn’t hung all of our doors yet so they were just in here waiting to be hung.Laminate Flooring-3 Laminate Flooring-4

So there you have it, our new laminate floors that look like real wood! The day after we laid them we moved our mattresses out of the basement and started living up here. It feels SO good to be out of our basement dwelling!

I have been following your post for almost a year and I love what you do! Next few weeks we will be installing our laminate wood floors as well so I am excited to see your floors! Thanks for the cleaning tip, I have never used Bona before but will buy the 4 pc. starter kit as well as the dust head cloth.

Oh thank you so much for following and commenting! I think you will LOVE laminate. I sure do. If you’re removing carpet make sure you watch my “tips and tricks” because the ice scraper trick is key. My mom and sister and I all use Bona and we all really like it!

Thank you for sharing your experience. My wife and I are looking for new flooring and are interested in trying laminate. I can’t believe you laid all of this in one day! It looks beautiful. Have you been pleased with the durability of it?

I would HIGHLY recommend laminate. Thank you so much. Yes they are very durable and we love them, we laid similar flooring in two houses and would do it again. Good luck with your decision!
