If you follow me on instagram, or if you read my “Five on Friday” a few weeks ago, you’ve probably figured out that we were up to something major. It just wasn’t fair to leave you all hanging in the dark, so now I can finally share all the details… we sold our house and bought another fixer upper!
We bought the auction house a year and a half ago with plans to stay in it for a while. We spent the last year updating it and getting it looking good. Once we could finally kick back and enjoy it we started talking about what we really wanted for our future. When we both evaluated what was most important to us we agreed on these things:
-Becoming debt free
-Living with less stuff
-Living out of town with some land
Once we decided that those were our goals, we realized that weren’t going to accomplish them staying put. We realized we COULD accomplish our first two goals by selling this house and taking the equity to pay off our student loans. We also realized that if we downsized we could live with less stuff, and save towards our goal of purchasing land. After deciding on those things it was easy to make the decision to put this house on the market.
Yes, this was the house that we poured our hearts and souls into over the past year. Yes, it was the house with the HUGE yard, beautiful kitchen, and space that suited us so perfectly. But it was keeping us in debt, and it wasn’t going to be our forever home. Of course our plan to accomplish those goals was only going to work if we could sell for the right price… and find another smaller project house for the right price. So we put it on the market, and left it all in God’s hands. Within the first week on the market we had a full price offer, which we accepted!
For a short while we were on our ways to being debt free and homeless! First we found an adorable hundred year old house that we were totally in love with, but for a few reasons that house just didn’t end up being “the one”. Then we found a ranch that needed some love and TLC that we could see working just perfectly for us. Within a week of accepting an offer on our house we were under contract on our next project!
So on Tuesday night we packed EVERYTHING we owned into trailers and trucks. Then we lived in an empty house Wednesday, and unloaded everything into the new house on Thursday. Thankfully we have some AMAZING friends who blew us away by their generosity spending their time moving our stuff. Even though it was only a two block move, it still was a ton of work.
After moving in on Thursday, I left the disaster for a long weekend at my parents house in MN. So I haven’t taken pics yet, but I’ll warn you that we will NOT be short on projects! Let’s just say it’s got a rainbow of colored carpet, as well as a rainbow of wallpaper. It’s going to be a fun one!
People keep asking me if I was sad to go, and honestly, it’s bittersweet. I’m excited to take our proceeds and write a big check to be done with our student loans forever. It was hard to leave our completed house, but it will also be nice to have new projects and designs to fuel me! As bad as I wanted to bring our daughter home to her adorable bedroom, it will also be nice to have a distraction to keep my mind off of the incredibly long wait to bring her home.
So get ready, because there’s going to be a TON of new and exciting projects on the new house, and you know I’ll be blogging each and every one of them!
