Around here at BrightGreenDoor I know you’re used to seeing lots of pretty pictures of my house. That’s because I’m really good at cropping and only shooting from the “right angles”. Today is not about those pretty shots. Today we’re talking about the ugly flush mount lights throughout our house. I’ll start with this beauty that greets you at the front door.
Update: Here it is NOW (12/2017)
A little further down the hall is this undersized, underlit flush mount from the seventies.
Here’s one more shot of the leafy light in the entry.
Then upstairs we’ve got three more of those undersized fixtures from the seventies. Thankfully I had some Wayfair rewards in my account, so I was able to pick out a few new light fixtures to replace some of these gems! While shopping for affordable modern flush mount lighting I realized what a difficult task it really was!
Update… here is this space now (12/16)!
So I decided to keep track of all of the lights that I considered, and share them with you today! I grouped them into three categories: under $100, under $150, and under $200. In our case where I’ve got nine flush mount lights to replace they can add up quickly. I should also note that although I’m trying to stick with oil rubbed bronze fixtures throughout our house, many of these fixtures also come in other finishes. I have to admit though that gorgeous brass fixture really tempted me!
I know that up to $100 still seems like a lot of money to spend on lighting when you can pick up a builder basic “boob light” for around $10. All of these fixtures have SO much more style and character than a $10 boob light. One big thing to keep in mind is to look at the dimensions of each light and make sure it is appropriate for your room. Often a 13″ light is good for a hallway, but would look significantly undersized in a master bedroom. Many of these lights are also available in bigger diameters if you search. My opinion is that for a kids room a smaller light is typically ok, but in a living space or master bedroom you should go larger.

These lights are all a bit more of a splurge than the first set. They also have a ton of character though! I actually splurged and used up most of my rewards on the Dainolite Archello (L) for our foyer. Won’t it look so much better than the current leafy fixture?!
OK, so I’ll admit, even though they’re affordable, it’s still hard for me to stomach almost $200 for a flush mount light fixture. But then again, how much character do these ones have?! I am LOVING the Hemingson and would seriously consider it for our mudroom. I think that it would go great with the mobile chandelier from West Elm that I have in my dining room.
Hopefully this roundup of gorgeous flush mount lights will help you in deciding which fixtures to pick for your home without totally breaking your budget. To see all the lighting I ended up choosing for our house head to this post!
