Best Shiplap Tutorials

February 5, 2015 By BrightGreenDoor

I’m sure you’re just as obsessed with Joanna Gaines and Fixer Upper as I am I’m obsessed. My FAVORITE thing about almost all the houses they redo is the ship-lap. WHY don’t old houses in North Dakota have those beautiful planked walls? Why when I tear away drywall, do I just find studs?? Since I don’t have the good fortune to own an old house covered in shiplap, I’ve had to make due and create my own wood planked walls. Here’s all the info I could find on the best shiplap tutorials.

Before planking the bathroom walls I did my research, and found out there are a LOT of ways to plank walls! Since there are so many great tutorials out there, I didn’t want to create another one, but rather just share the tutorials for planking walls that were the most helpful to us!Planked Wall Bathroom

1. Pretty Handy Girl– Her tutorial is really good for getting plywood cut down and spacing using a coin. What I really liked though was how she went 2/3 of the way up. Wouldn’t hers be pretty with a picture rail on top?

2. House of Smiths– Hers is floor to ceiling and really makes the planking look original to the house, just like the ship-lap I love!

3. Home Stories– She used Tongue and Groove Planking which is what I did. It’s more expensive than plywood, but also less hassle and more convenient. In our case it was such a small space it was worth the convenience.

4. Vintage Revivals– Of course Mandi would do something really unique and cool and hang hers diagonally. I think it’s too funky for our Craftsman house, but I also LOVE it.

5. Infarrantly Creative– Her’s is modeled after what my friend Layla found Underneath her walls and it looks gorgeous. Like a genuine old house’s framing.

6. Thrifty Decor Chick– She also used tongue and groove, but I LOVE the way she bridged her seams with upright pieces. If I were doing a longer wall this is what I’d do.

7. Elizabeth & Co.- She turned hers and went vertical. I think this has a beautiful classic look to it.

8. Jenna Sue– Hers is similar to #6, but she went all the way to the ceiling and it’s stunning.

9. Tatertots & Jello– She used MDF casing molding and spaced each board further apart for a really antique dramatic look.

Don’t all these make you want to go out and plank every wall?! I’m already brainstorming how I want to do my halls. Hopefully I’ll be back soon with an update on how our planked walls turned out! **Update** Here is the link to that post!

We are moving into a new home (new to us) the end of May. Our new home is a Coastal Cottage style, and I think shiplap is exactly what I have in mind! I can’t wait to move it and spend some time deciding what I might want to do with my walls. This is such a nice round-up of all kinds of ideas for planking my walls, I will be pinning this and sharing over at G+ and FB. I don’t want to lose track of this great post! Thanks! Chloe

How exciting! The shiplap look is so timeless I don’t think there could be a way it wouldn’t look amazing. Thanks for commenting!
