Hello All! Can you believe it’s already week 3 of the One Room Challenge?! This week I’m sharing our mudroom with a wallpapered ceiling! Yes you read that right… even though my window still hasn’t arrived I’m pushing forward and I wallpapered the ceiling!
In week 1 I shared my mood board and plans.
In week 2 I shared my progress of building the mudroom.
Here’s where I started week 3… with newly mudded and taped drywall. I spent the week sanding and mudding over and over until the walls were perfect. Then I painted the walls and ceiling with my go-to white paint, Benjamin Moore “Chantilly Lace”. I also primed the ceiling with “Shieldz” a specific wallpaper primer.
I painted the exterior of the door with Sherwin Williams “Night Owl” and the Interior with Benjamin Moore “Midnight Oil”. I also added this lever doorknob and deadbolt.
While my paint dried I tiled the floor with this matte ceramic faux marble tile. It was incredibly affordable and I did the whole room for under $150! I used a gray grout to finish it off.
Then it was onto wallpapering. Let me tell you… Wallpapering a ceiling is NOT for the faint of heart. It requires enough step stools and platforms that you never have to let go to touch the floor. It also requires arm strength and endurance that I do NOT have! Somehow I persevered! I’m sure you can understand how I was not able to simultaneously take pictures while putting the wallpaper on the ceiling.
I had polled you all for wallpaper suggestions and “D” the bird and cloud wallpaper clearly won out. Then I went to purchase it and realized it was 3x the cost of all of the other wallpapers I was considering! So cost won out and I went with this floral wallpaper by House of Hackney.
SOMEHOW I calculated wrong and ran out of wallpaper! Now I need a 4′ x 27″ piece and I had to order a complete double roll for this small amount.
Even though I’ve been accomplishing tons, I still feel like there is SO much to do!
Here’s what’s left on the list:
- Install Window
- Build and tile step
- Move white door to replace tan door
- Build bench
- Install hook wall
- Secure and Level Wardrobes, Add New shelves and Bins
- Install All Trim and Crown Molding
- Purchase and Install Siding
- Hang Light Fixture
- Find and Install Missing Wallpaper
- Style, Stage, and Photograph Reveal
- Find and Purchase 5’x10′ Rug
Thanks a ton for following along! I really appreciate everyone’s support and enthusiasm! This mudroom is definitely the biggest DIY project I’ve ever taken on and it’s so wonderful to know how many people I have rooting for me!
Looking Good Jess. I love that door. I’m feeling you pain with the wallpaper, I did the same thing once and there was a spot behind the dresser without wallpaper until I moved 🙂 I guess you can’t really get away with that on the ceiling though.
Ha! I love that! I’m going to try and contact the manufacturer tomorrow to see if they have any extra to selL!
It’s gorgeous! That’s one of my favorite wallpapers!!
Aw thanks friend! I’m loving it too!
wow! it is looking so amazing in there! i love your home and what you’ve done to it so much so far!
Thank you! It’s going to be dicey if I can get it all done on time! I sure hope it all comes together!
Wow you got tonnes done this week! And I laughed as you were explaining the overhead strength needed for the wallpaper – that would have been my downfall too! 😂xx
Good thing I got so much done because I haven’t made any progress since then! Hoping it’s a productive Monday and Tuesday! Glad I could humor you, that ceiling was brutal!
Doing the unexpected turned out to be really fun! Who thought roses would look so fun on a ceiling but they do! I cannot believe all that you’re doing plus being Mom and wife and contractor, crew and coordinator. I think we would like to clone you?!!!!
Lord will you help her easily receive the wallpaper she needs? Help this project from now to the end go smoothly and safely. Keep her table filled with laughter as she works so hard to get all this done not just for the ORC but before snow. Thank you Lord. Amen
Lord have mercy on those of us who have chosen to wallpaper ceilings! I am a retired designer and should have had the sense to hire a professional as I have always done and common sense dictates. Must have begun the decline cognitively? Ended up spending a small fortune (Schumacher Hollyhock Pyne)$$$ No guessing as to why Albert Hadley called Mrs. Pyne…..PRINCESS$$$$. After falling, slipping and using language a sailor would blush at, it is up and it is beautiful beyond words. Stunning. Always order more than needed. You will use the excess for repairs, revamping a lampshade, covering a wastebasket, window shade tape, ect….mmmm. ENJOY MY YOUNG FRIEND, YOU HAVE GONE WHERE OTHERS DARE NOT. GO TO THE FRONT OF THE CLASS.
I was laughing so hard reading this. I hope you didn’t get hurt too badly doing your ceiling! I should have ordered way more. I will GO TO THE FRONT OF THE CLASS! I wish I could add a laughing tears emoji to this! Thanks for the laugh!
Aw thank you for the prayer! I’m going to work on tracking down the wallpaper tomorrow! Hoping to make tons of progress this week! My window shoudl arrive too!
you know the old saying plan b at the price of the wallpaper give thought to another use for the area shelving that hangs from ceiling for stashing out of season items or extra toilet paper paper towels etc. you could make it very attractive i am sure, just a thought xx
Thanks for the suggestion. You’re probably right, I could make something work up there. I’m going to try and track down some extra wallpaper tomorrow. If not we’ll see if I have to get creative!
Worse case scenario—if no wallpaper is available, then make a border around the room the size of the missing piece. I would use black paint to make it look like you did it on purpose. It may look like a trey ceiling—-maybe??? Or you could purchase Wallpaper C and use it to make a contrast border—although, this may be too busy. Hopefully the wallpaper company will have it and GIVE you some extra paper since you’re going to gush about them to all of your readers about how helpful they have been!!
This mudroom is looking SO good so far, can’t wait to see the final reveal!
Thank you! I’m getting really excited about it too!
Jess, you have gotten so much down! Love the paper you chose and I bet you are rocking some new upper arms!
My mother was a professional wall paper hanger for awhile and it is tricky. You have to be very careful to calculate for the match and many papers have to be trimmed in width as well. Takes some good geometry and math skills. A number of clients did not order enough before calling her and she had to get creative sometimes, like hanging it in panels or piecing a deliberate mismatch to use every scrap.
Although I like the look of wallpaper, i think stenciling is a good alternative and is so much easier to change later.
I’ve wallpapered several ceilings! So I appreciate how much work that was. The last ceiling I talked my hubby, son and soon to be daughter-in-law into helping out. What a way to welcome her into the family. Her job was to keep track of the scissors and sponge. At one point I ask where they were. She was totally shocked! She really didn’t think I meant for her to keep track of them. But when you are up on the ladder the last thing you need is to be looking for your tools. After all you wouldn’t be up there to begin with if you had a brain. 😊
I love this! That’s what I needed! Because when you’re up on that ladder holding the wallpaper to the ceiling you cannot get down for a tool! Glad you had help! I’ll make sure that I do before I wallpaper another ceiling! Smart woman!
