Yesterday I revealed my “put on love” sign that I just made for the master bedroom, but that made me realize I’ve never actually revealed the master bedroom! Yes… it’s in our listing brochure, and some snippets were shown yesterday, but here’s the nitty gritty details of The Evolution of Our Bedroom.
Let’s start with the before (yes it is the listing picture because back then I was too antsy to start projects and never took “before” shots. I’ve learned my lesson though!)
Initially I hung an old closet door for our headboard, and called it good. And then for a year I wanted to puke every time I looked at the bedroom walls (over-exagerating… I know).
I hung these garage sale black out curtains solely to block out the light, but they never looked good.
I picked up this chair off of consolidated (our Craigslist). I was in love with the shape and legs but it was so ugly I kept it covered with a white sheet for almost a year.
Finally I took the white sheet and made a slipcover for it. I would have rather had it reupholstered, but this option cost me $4 for the thrift store sheet, rather than $300 that the upholsterer quoted me! Someday I will get it beautifully upholstered. (anybody have any cheap recommendations?)
Then by a stroke of pure luck Matt and I stopped at the Habitat ReStore while we were on vacation in Rapid City and came across a 5 gallon bucket of grey paint. It looked similar to the paint chips I happened to have in my purse but we didn’t know if it was indoor or outdoor paint, flat or high gloss, or anything! I took a risk and dropped $20 and it turned out to be a good risk because I started brushing the paint on the walls and I was in LOVE! One gloomy spring day my friend Steph came over and helped me knock out painting the whole master bedroom. I instantly went from hating my room to loving it (minus the brown stained carpet and yellowed closet doors). In some lights it looks grey and sometimes it looks a tinge green. I love it all the time.
During my power hour (approximately midnight) I couldn’t stand it and I broke out the white paint and hit the closet doors (after deglossing and priming them).
I put this sneak peek on the blog, and then slowly chipped away at finishing the room while I excitedly waited for our new carpet.
I spray painted a bunch of random stuff gold. At one point Matt threatened to take away the gold spray paint! (similar to the situation when I got ahold of the chalkboard paint!)
That random stuff included branches straight out of the backyard that I painted gold and hung the curtains from. The curtains are from Ikea and my awesome sister picked them out and shipped them up to me. I can’t find them on the website though… maybe they are discontinued? (hate that)
Now that our house is on the market I decided to call it quits. I still wanted to strip and stain Matt’s nightstand, and do something with his lampshade, but the room could qualify as “finished”. It includes many of my favorite things including: my refinished white dresser, my DIY gold decorative spheres, my gold dipped table, and my popcorn tin lampshade!
Looks geat Jess! So glad I could help! 😉
You’re pretty awesome! I owe you back…. got any rooms to paint!?! Now that our house is on the market all my projects are on hold so I’m antsy to do something!
Love it! I really like your bedding. Where did you get it?
Thanks! It is a duvet cover from ikea. Here is the link: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80224906/
Great transformation! I love how the white furniture pops off the paint color! I’m stopping by from Create It Thursday. (#150 DIY Photo Canvas and 151 Homemade Laundry Detergent)
Thanks a ton! We’re moving and I think I’m going to paint our new room the same color and try to just replicate this room there!
Great job using what you have and making it better.
Thanks a ton! Now that you say that I realize that just about everything in the room has been re-done or re-purposed. I think I appreciate it even more knowing all the work I put into it!
Wow, what an amazing transformation of your bedroom! You have done a fabulous job!! I love all the special unique touches and how DIY and thrifty you were in creating your fab new bedroom too:)
Thanks! It’s so nice to hear someone appreciates my “design style” as much as I do! Sometimes people are like, “You hung a closet door above your bed????” or “Why are your curtains hanging from branches????” It’s nice to hear someone “gets it”!!!
Looks amazing! I love your love sign and your dresser!!

Thanks so much! I just checked out your blog and you’ve got a ton of beautiful things too! I’m your newest follower. Thanks for stopping by!
lots of great projects on a budget. I love how things work out that way, and how well they come together. Beautiful room makeover
Thank you so much! I think I’d call it “vintage modern”. My husband thinks the two styles are a little too different to go together, but I love it. Thanks so much for your comment!
