Today is the day! The One Room Challenge reveal! I’m participating as a guest participant and took on the MAJOR undertaking of renovating our kitchen AND dining room in six weeks! After many long work days I’m so proud to be able to reveal our modern kitchen with black cabinets.
**For the Dining Room Reveal Head to This Post!**
In the kitchen we were able to create a layout that works for multiple cooks in the kitchen and create island seating for four people.
Here is what we started with in the kitchen! A giant fluorescent light box, an undersized dated oven, an island that barely seated three, no pantry, and a built in desk.
The first thing we did when we moved in was take down the fluorescent lights in favor of these modern brass penants (I’ll link all sources at the bottom of the post). Next we turned the oven cabinet into a pantry, tore out the desk, built a fridge enclosure, and built a double oven cabinet where the old fridge sat. I was able to do this with MDF. We also painted all the cabinets a pure black and added new brass hardware.
I installed a new peel and stick glass tile backsplash, right over the existing backsplash! We also tore apart the island and straightened out the cabinets in order to be able to sit four stools. I built butcher block countertops which were an affordable and beautiful choice, especially against the black cabinets.Once everything was positioned I installed new laminate floors that really tied together the entire kitchen.
I used special vinyl paint to paint all of the windows in both rooms black.Â
Thank you SO much for checking out our modern kitchen with black cabinets! I always love the motivation of the One Room Challenge to complete a room (or two) in six short weeks!

Fab girl! I love the curtains, the rug, the hardware…It all looks great!
You are such an encouragement. It’s definitely not nearly as bold as yours, but it fits my style and our home. Congrats on getting it all done! I’m sure we’ll both get to spend lots of time enjoying our new spaces!
Your kitchen is just stunning!! I love the black cabinets!
You’re the sweetest! I love them so much too! It was a gamble but I’m so glad I went for it!
Your kitchen and dining room look amazing!! I’ll never understand angled islands. I had one in my last house. Love how you changed the configuration and what a lucky find with that table! It’s gorgeous!
Aw thank you Emy! Angled islands are such a waste of space. My dad always taught me to use angles sparingly because they only waste space. That table really was a steal, thanks!!
jess, it looks amazing! love the black and white and natural vibe you have going on and LOVE that dining room light fixture!
Aw thanks friend!! That light really is amazing, I’m so sad that it seems to be unavailable or discontinued.
Help I think I’m in love with your dining room light!
Ha! It’s ok, I’m in love too. It really is gorgeous and totally makes the whole room.
I love how the space turned out! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much! I’m glad I could share it!!
Jess!! Those black cabinets are such showstoppers! And I’ve always loved that light fixture – almost put it in my kitchen, but my table is so much smaller than yours. Smart idea with the beams! Everything looks amazing – job well done, friend!!
Aw thank you friend! It is a BIG light but for this big table it worked out beautifully. Thank you so much for your encouragement.
Omg, Jess, is looks so different! You guys got a ton done!! It looks great!
It was a ton of work in such a short time but I’m glad I battled through it. It’s so worth it to be able to enjoy it now!
Jess!! You’ve done SO MUCH in 6 weeks! It’s absolutely stunning! Beautiful transformation. I’m dreaming of dark cabinets one day… *fingers crossed*. Congrats on TWO beautiful spaces my friend!
Aw thank you! It was a TON of work in such a short time. It’s so worth it now though. Would you paint your current cabinets or replace them?! It was a hard sell for my husband but now we both love them.
I’m loving the wall paper above the trimwork and the art ledge! Such a great way to take advantage of that long wall behind the dining table
Thanks! That wall had stumped me because it’s so long and there isn’t room to put anything on it. I do really love how it turned out though.
Great makeover!
Thank you so much!
Seriously AMAZING!! I love that light and the kitchen is just simply incredible!! Can you please just transport it to my home? Our kitchen needs SO much work!
Ha! You can transport your bedroom to my home as well! Thank you so much! Kitchens are so daunting and everything is so expensive. This was all worth it though.
This is beyond amazing. The transformation is incredible!!! The table was an amazing score!!
Aw thank you Mila! I’m so glad I tackled it. I’m glad you love the table! At first I was afraid it wasn’t modern enough for our home, but now I feel like it is the perfect piece.
This turned out amazing. First thought when I saw your dining area was that it is a good setting for Thanksgiving! It looks good girl!
YES! I’ll be hosting Thanksgiving this year and I can’t wait to set a beautiful tablescape!
What a huge transformation!! I can’t believe you tackled these two beautiful rooms in 6 weeks! I love your lighting!! Amazing job!
It really was an insane 6 weeks. I don’t think I’ll ever tackle such a big space in a short amount of time again. Thank you so much!!
Wow Jess you really elevated your kitchen and dining area for this challenge. I love everything !!! This kitchen is so modern now with those fantastic lights and just enough color from the rug to pop to room. Bravo!!!!
Thank you so much! Your comments are so kind. It’s crazy how much could be transformed with paint. I also LOVE that vintage rug, it was my first one and it definitely won’t be the last!
Oh my goodness! Yes to it all! Everything and I mean everything looks amazing. We installed Select Surfaces Honey Maple too. I love it!
Thank you so much! I love the floors too! I think I’m going to install it throughout the rest of the house as well. It’s just such a good mid-tone color. Congrats on finishing your space beautifully!
Wow, it turned out fantastic. The black cabinets are such a bold statement but work perfectly with everything else being so light and airy. And that light fixture – stunning!!
Thank you so much! I was afraid the black would overpower everything but I agree that it worked out! I LOVE the light too! It totally makes the whole room. Thanks for stopping by!
Cannot believe you pulled all of this off in 6 weeks!!! Amazing!! It looks like such a coherent, well-designed space. Love it so much!
It was insane. I barely rested the whole time. Thanks so much!
What an amazing transformation! I love your new spaces. The kitchen is gorgeous and the dining room room is so inviting. I love the rug, and the black window frames. Everything turned out so beautifully!
Aw thank you!! I’m so happy that I painted the windows. It really transformed the whole space. Thanks for stopping by!
Wow!! What a lot of work you did, raising the floor and covering the window and door. Absolutely amazing! I love the black cabinets and that mid century buffet and your table….Congratulations on a beautiful makeover!!
Thank you! Yes it was a TON of work but I feel like now our house is reaching it’s potential! Thank you so much!
I can’t believe you took on both spaces AND how amazing they look now! It must be so nice to have one seamless room that is beautiful and functional! I love your cabinets now, and that island opened up so much more room and flow than before. Job well done!!
Aw thank you so much! I can’t believe I did it either! Yes every time I walk between the rooms I am so grateful that they’re done! That island was just begging to be opened up. Thank you so much for following along!
