Week 2 of the One Room Challenge is here and I’m excited to say that last week I made a TON of progress. I’ve been spending my every spare minute working on this mudroom and it’s really cool to see it take shape! I’ll walk you through our progress and how to turn a screen porch into a mudroom!
** I am no expert and building code and regulation are different everywhere. PLEASE ensure that you check and follow your local code, this blog post is for entertainment only!**
Here is what we started with… a corner of our house on the foundation and under the roof with aluminum walls and screens, Astroturf carpet, a hole where a window to the house used to exist, and a big mess.
My middle son and I had the best time with “demo day” as he thought is was so awesome getting to wreck things!
By the end of the day this is what we had:
As you can see the corner post was never touched, so that was still supporting the house. I spent the next day framing everything. Purchasing a framing nailer was the BEST purchase I’ve made in a long time and made for quick work! After these photos I added an additional support under the window and I also ensured that I anchored the walls to the foundation.
Next I added OSB sheathing to the exterior.
Finally I added housewrap around the OSB and taped the seams. Then I added this beautiful Mid-Century door to the room! The window still hasn’t arrived but that will be the next thing to go in. Then I can start installing siding to match the rest of the house. For now I’m not going to add rock, maybe in the Spring?
Lastly my husband helped me to install the drywall throughout the mudroom and I patched and leveled the floors. This week I’m working on mudding and taping the drywall, and with our wet muggy weather this job seems to be DRAGGING on very slowly.
I ended up ordering one of them but I’m going to keep you all in suspense! As soon as this drywall is done I’ll be painting the walls and ceiling, and then installing the wallpaper! This week I’ll also be painting both sides of the door and maybe laying the tile floor! Although I got a ton done this week, here is what’s left on my list:
- Finish Drywall
- Paint and Install Window
- Install Siding
- Paint Walls and Ceiling
- Paint Door and Install Lock Set
- Install Tile Floor
- Grout Tile Floor
- Move Door from house opening to garage opening
- Install Wallpaper
- Deconstruct Wardrobes and Move from Master Bedroom
- Build Bench, Cubbies, and Hook Wall
- Install Trim
- Decorate and Style
It’s a bit intimidating to look at that list all at once!!! I’m just going to have to keep taking it one step at a time and pray that the window arrives quickly, and that the weather will dry up so that my drywall mud starts drying a bit faster!
Thanks so much for following along!
