Faux Cement Tile Painted Floors

May 3, 2017 By BrightGreenDoor

This might be my favorite blog post of all time! Today I’m talking about my Faux Cement Tile Painted Floors!!! Faux Cement Tile Painted Floors

I completely transformed our dated peachy tile by painting it! These floors travel ALL the way into our mudroom.

This was the “before”. It wasn’t horrendous, but it also wasn’t my style. In the mudroom I also had some serious tile repairs to make before I could even paint. The old grout was all cracked and these tiles rocked and were no longer adhered to the subfloor. Because I was going to be painting I wasn’t worried about matching the tile or the grout, and then it ended up matching perfectly… which never would have happened if I was trying to match. How to Repair and Paint Tile

I absolutely LOVE Amy Howard One Step Paint and knew that I wanted to use it on the floor. I started out with one coat of “Good Man is Hard to Find“. **Contains Affiliate Links**
Painting Tile Floors

I rolled it on using this 6″ roller and then my faithful trusty short handled brush for edging.
Painted Tile Floors

After rolling the first coat I decided that “Good Man is Hard to Find” was just too blue, and I decided to mix it with Black One Step Paint.

Amy Howard One Step Paint

I actually loved this color so much that I contemplated just leaving my floors this color! It looked like slate tile and really looked awesome. But my heart’s desire was cement tile like these ones that I laid out.
Faux Cement Tile

I contacted StencilsOnline and had them create a custom stencil for me. I just uploaded a picture of the tile and gave them the dimensions of my tiles (12″). The were super efficient and amazing to work with. The stencils end up getting some wear and tear, so I ended up two more stencils for this project totaling around $90 with shipping. If you’re looking for this exact stencil design I shared a link to the PDF through the signup at the bottom of this page. Just enter your e-mail and you’ll receive it in your inbox! Then you can order it in any dimensions based off of your tile! How to Paint Cement Tile Floors

For the stenciling I used more One Step Paint, this time in the color “Bauhaus Buff“. I tried a few methods of brushing, but ended up used a 4″ roller to roll the stencil. How to Stencil Tile Floors

This was the SLOW painstaking work where I listened to every podcast under the sun. “Missing Richard Simmons”, “The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey”, “Young House Love has a Podcast”, “Chris Loves Julia”, “Serial”, “One Extraordinary Podcast”, and “Tapestry” to be exact! I don’t even know how many hours went into stenciling. Painted Cement Tile Floors How to Paint Tile Floor Faux Cement Tile Stenciled Floor

After rolling all the stencils, I used two art brushes in black and white to touch up anywhere that the stencil had bled. How to Paint Stenciled Floors

As you can see at this point I still didn’t have the edges stenciled. How to Stencil Flooring

So I laid the stencil in those squares and traced the lines with a sharpie. Then I used the art brush to paint those tiles.Black and White Stenciled Floor

FINALLY when it was all done I sealed this floor like crazy with this sealer. Amy Howard also has a great sealer but it was out of stock at the time. Actually I sealed the black floor twice, then I sealed it twice more once it was stenciled. Then two more coats once I stenciled the edges. So it has a total of 6 coats of sealer! I sealed using a paint roller. Was it all worth it?? I’d say YES! Honestly I can probably give you a better answer once I know how it holds up over time. I’m hoping all that sealer pays off. **UPDATE** Check out this post to see how it held up!

Maybe you caught a glimpse of that barn door at the end of the hallway? I built it using this tutorial and hung it using my barn door hardware tutorial.Green Barn Door with Cement Tile Floor

Let’s get back to those beautiful floors though. I also carried them into our powder bathroom. Black and Green Bathroom with Cement Tile

Here’s a peek looking back towards the living room.Painted Faux Cement Tile

Here it is looking into the kitchen. I love this tile so much that I’m considering using the real cement tile as my kitchen backsplash.Cement Tile Hallway

Hopefully a new storm door is on our agenda for this summer, but this floor makes the entry so amazing!

I also LOVE the way that the new floor looks with my updated staircase.  Because reveal week is next week, I don’t want to share too much of the mudroom, but the truth is that the floor isn’t even done in there yet! I’m waiting on my second and third stencil to arrive and then I’ll get that floor stenciled. The first too stencils were just too gunked up with paint to use. If you’re looking to see the prior week’s ORC posts you can find those here:

Just for dramatic effect, here are a few side by side “Before” and “Afters”. How to Paint Tile Floors HOW to DIY Stenciled Faux Cement Tile Floors

Thank you so much for stopping by today! If you love this look, or hate your tile I think it’s a great solution. I want to thank Amy Howard for providing the paint for this project. I’ve used their paint time and time again and it is hands down my favorite paint.

**7/31/17** If you’re curious how this is holding up (and MANY people are), head to this post to read all about how it’s handling traffic and life under a family of five!

How did this hold up? I have to fill in 5ft area and am going to try to hand texturize saltillo tile. Wondering how it will hold. Any concerns or feed on this?

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      March 14, 2018 at 2:14 pm

Ours held up great! I think the texture may even help the pain adhere! I would totally do it again.

Love this! I am doing the same thing, right now but in my sunroom and couldn’t be happier!! I got my stencil from the same place and i agree, they were great. I used Rust-oleums new chalk paint line and it has been great to work with. I was curious as to how many coats of Poly you put on. I have been using Rust-oleum Poly Matte finish and 4 coats with no coat on the base color. My dog runs through there daily and with his nails so I was worried after reading your “how too” if i have enough? I did a test though as i was going and it wouldn’t come off after the 3rd so i did 4 coats just to be safe. I should do another….? I guess like you said…only time will tell. I am half way done so check my instagram https://www.instagram.com/bridget_gracet/ for the finished look….come June!

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      May 4, 2017 at 9:02 pm

WOW! Great minds think alike huh?! The only real reason for the poly on the base coat was because it was getting walked on before I could get to stenciling it. I would hope and think 4 is enough, but I’m not positive. I love the battery you chose!

How is your floors holding up ladies? I’m thinking of doing this but would love any tips before I start. Wanting them to last about 3 years…is that too much?

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      April 4, 2018 at 7:30 pm

We only lived there a year after painting, but they still looked great. I don’t know if it’s a 20 year option, but definitely a great three year plan!

  12. Allison says

    May 4, 2017 at 12:55 pm

IT’S TOO GOOD! Seriously, what an insane impact — you did a wonderful job! I am so excited to start ours, but also kind of dreading it! Why did you seal the base coat prior to stencilling, rather than waiting until the entire thing was done? Is there a method to your madness? Thanks so much for sharing!

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      May 4, 2017 at 8:44 pm

Thanks so much! Originally I wasn’t 100% sure if I was going to leave the floor black or stencil it, so I put two coats of sealer on while I tried to decide. Then after stenciling the full tiles I didn’t want them to get scuffed or scratched while I worked on the rest. It’s also the main hallway through our house so I wanted to seal immediately before someone messed it up! Then I just had the edges to seal, but I figured if I was sealing the edges I might as well put a couple coats on the entire floor. Hope that helps!

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      May 9, 2017 at 9:08 am

Aw thank you. I’m not loving that the edges aren’t as perfect as the rest, but really your eye isn’t drawn to them. It definitely took some determination. Thanks!

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      May 9, 2017 at 9:06 am

Definitely! I’ve read that Amy Howard paint can handle high heat. I painted our fireplace brick with Amy Howard paint and it’s held up really well.

Holy cow!!!! that is an amazing transformation!!!! You must be over the moon every time you walk into that space. I can’t even imagine how much time that took you. Your poor knees and back!! I did my front porch tile the same way with a very similar stencil that I made, and if it hadn’t been for my daughter helping with the stenciling I may not have finished and its not half as much space as yours.
Check out how similar mine is….http://www.mimzyandcompany.com/painted-faux-encausticcement-tile-front-porch/
Anyway…it looks great!!! coordinates with your stair runner so nicely….well done.

It looks TDF! Just stunning!!! Great work. I don’t have the artistic skills or patience to do this. But I do know how to tile, and am not afraid to do that. Cost aside, what would you say is easier? What you did or tiling? Thanks so much for your honest opinion ?

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      May 21, 2017 at 9:16 pm

Honestly, if cost wasn’t an option I’d probably have just done the tile. But in our case cost was an option. Tiling would have been a lot of work too though. Thank you for your kind comments!

  22. Tina says

    May 18, 2017 at 3:28 pm

HI- question…so if you did it again, would you only use the black paint as a base? Or do you like the combination of the good man is hard to find along with the black? I’d obviously rather just go with one color:) Thanks – looks amazing!

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      May 21, 2017 at 9:17 pm

I’d probably just use the black paint right off the bat. Just so that I wouldn’t have to get the mixture right. Thanks!

    • Elise says

      July 15, 2017 at 4:04 pm

Hi! That was my question – was the mixture combination you created? Was it 1/2 Any Howard Good Man and 1/2 AH Black?

      Thank you!

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      July 16, 2017 at 9:01 pm

Probably more like 2/3 Good Man and 1/3 Black Thanks!

After having yours for a few weeks do you think it would hold up? It looks so beautiful and I think worth the work as long as i don’t have to touch up every week. LOVE IT.

Love, love, love this!!! I really like black, brown and whites together. Excited to hear how it holds up to traffic. Can I ask where you got your beautiful black and white striped stair runner from? Also, was the stencil you got made out of thin poster board/cardboard or plastic? How did you create the design to send to them? File format? Thanks so much!

    • BrightGreenDoor says

Thanks so much for commenting! The stair runner is from Annie Selke. Here is the post on it: https://www.brightgreendoor.com/black-painted-staircase/ The stencil was a thin plastic. I just sent them the image of the inspiration tile from Home Depot’s website. They handled turning it into a stencil!

Could this work with glossy tile? It looks like yours were more on the matte side? Do you think this type of paint would easily chip off if used on gloss

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      July 13, 2017 at 4:16 pm

It’s hard to say, I think if it were a really glossy tile I’d use something like a concrete etcher or deglosser first. My tile wasn’t totally matte, but also didn’t have much of a gloss.

This is amazing! Also, I have to ask – what did you use for your stair runner? It looks thin like fabric. How did you install it? I’m in desperate need of a runner for my main stairway but hate the look (and price!) of all the store-bought runners and treads.

You’ve inspired me! I’m in the middle of doing my front bathroom like this. Quick question…did you only paint 1 coat of the white stencil or 2 coats? I’m concerned that 1 coat won’t be enough, but even more concerned about getting the stencil lined up right for a 2nd. I’m using Amy Howard paint too.
    Thanks so much!!

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      July 16, 2017 at 9:07 pm

I’m so happy I’ve inspired you to tackle it! I just did one coat of the white, but it was a fairly thick coat. I think it would have been hard to line up a second. It also would be quite a bit more work. I’ve been so happy with how the Amy Howard paint has held up. Hmmm. My roller marks showed for a second, but once it dried they only showed a little bit. Once I stenciled the white paint and sealed I couldn’t see any roller marks. I’d go ahead and stencil a couple tiles and seal those and see how you like it then. You could always try a different roller too and see if you’re happier with a different nap.

And another thing…. I just rolled on my first layer of sealer over the black and there are horrible roller marks. Wondering if I should cover it with a later or 2 of paint or keep sealing. I’m a new-be to chalk paint and sealing.
Looking for any help that I can get.
    Thanks!

This is just stunning. It truly is. We have a similar looking tile on our kitchen floor, except ours is green. It’s hideous. I would love to rip it out, but my husband is definitely not open to that idea. Seeing your gorgeous floor has gotten me to thinking that perhaps I could do this to our kitchen floor. My question to you is this: how is your floor holding up? Any chipping? I’m asking because our kitchen floor gets a lot of heavy use, and while I would love to tackle a project like this, I worry about how well it would hold up.

WOW! Absolutely stunning! THanks for all the tips. Ill follow them to a T! Will you please email me the pdf of your stencil? I cant find the link. Im going to paint my husbands law office bathroom. The tile in there now is just like your paired with gorg exposed brick and ugly brown tile. Im hoping to paint the wall tile a bright white, stencil the floor, paint the doors and window frame wrought iron by benjamin moore and give it a total facelift.

Fantastic, amazing job! And thank you for your generosity. Do you think this would work on the old-fashioned, square asphalt type tile?

      September 4, 2017 at 5:43 pm

Aw thanks so much for reading! I’m sorry but I’m not sure what type of tile you’re explaining. I think it would work on just about anything, as long as it’s not too shiny and you seal it well.

This is fantastic! I am curious if you think this would work on faux tile? Its the vinyl lock tile. I have this grey slate vinyl tile in mu kitchen and in my bathroom. Not sure it would adhear well? I have seen some people paint vinyl.

I think it would! I’ve seen painted vinyl tutorials before. I almost think it might hold up even better than tile.

We actually just recently sold the house, but they held up great! Even through the move they looked great. There weren’t any scratches. One time I dropped something and chipped the tile, but it wasn’t just the paint that chipped but the actual tile. One issue I had was that the grout was crumbling in one spot, but again, that was the grout, not the paint. Check out this post where I talk about how they held up: https://www.brightgreendoor.com/affordable-ways-to-update-with-paint/

Hi Jess! I’m new to your blog, but discovered it while looking for this same tile pattern! I’m not familiar with this particular brand of chalk paint (I typically use another brand – ASCP, and have it on hand). Do you think any brand would work, or was there a particular reason you chose the Amy Howard brand? Just curious! Thank you!

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      December 29, 2017 at 4:26 pm

I chose Amy Howard paint because I’ve used it often and love it, but really I do think any chalk paint would probably have the same result. Let me know if you do it! ASCP is another great product!

Love this! 1 question. How did you paint the parts around the doorways? Like the tile that is cut off because its cut between the doorway our stairs? Did you cut the stencil? Just curious. Sorry if i missed the comment if it was made above about this.
    Thanks!

No problem! I just traced the stencil with a sharpie and did some freehanding. Then I’d use a small brush to paint it by hand. Because it didn’t have straight lines and wasn’t a super geometric pattern it wasn’t too bad. Thanks!

Thank you so much for this post! Your floors look amazing! We have super outdated tile surrounding a jetted tub in our master. We rarely use the tub so it wouldn’t be exposed to a lot of direct moisture. Do you think this would for that application? Any recommendations for this project in the bathroom area?

    • BrightGreenDoor says

      January 3, 2018 at 8:27 am

Aw thank you so much! Yes I’d totally do this in a bathroom! I think as long as you seal it well it will hold up great. After almost a year ours were still looking amazing.

That’s a brilliant idea! I would like to know if after sometimes the tile is still perfect. I image that the risk is that the floor could be damaged by the traffic during the time.
Are you using any specific product for the maintenance, i.e. Detergent or wax??

    Thank you very much, Giulia

Thanks for commenting! They held up beautifully and I just used bona tile cleaner on the floors. We moved away from that house, but they took a LOT of traffic in our year there after I painted them and they looked awesome.

Hi from Puerto Rico! I am in love with your stenciled floor. I saw a lots but yours is my favorite one. Can you please send me the stencil you used? I will do it in my children bedroom floor with another color because we can’t afford (right now) a new ceramic floor and my home needs a full renovation after Huracan Maria hit. Thanks for your time and for bringing us your good taste. Saludos!

I love the floor stencil trend and I think your design would work in my foyer. The space is small and has 1980’s 6 inch parquet. I first thought I would use a 12 in design covering 4 parquet at a time but I really like the larger design. I think it would make the space seems larger and less busy. I would love to get one like the one you used.
    Thanks for the inspiration.
