This DIY Letterboard Ledge is a cheap and simple way to create oversized art.
On Monday I revealed our newly finished modern basement living room. Today I’m sharing the details on the DIY letterboard ledge. I was inspired by this image I came across on Instagram, but I couldn’t find any tutorials on how to make it. Thankfully it was pretty easy to figure out.
I bought quality 1×2 boards from our local hardware store. Then I set the blade on our table saw for about 1/4″ high and about 3/4″ deep. It was as simple as just running each board through the table saw. When doing this I saw sure to use two pieces of scrap wood to hold the boards in place. Then I screwed pop tabs onto the backs of the boards as picture hangers. Next I attached each shelf to the wall by using a level and nails to attach them. Then I printed oversized letters on 3.5″x5″ cardstock.
I chose the phrase “You are Chosen, You are loved, You belong, You are home”. This hangs in our kid’s play room and family room and is a constant reminder for our whole family. I thought about possibly staining the letterboard ledges, but for now I’m just sticking with the natural boards. It would be easy to go back and do later.
Obviously you could write just about ANY phrase that fits on the shelves. You could also do this with as many or as few ledges as you’d like. You could also print the letters on any size cardstock. Our shelves are all hung 6″ apart and that worked really well for this size of letter.
As much as I love our wood letterboard **contains affiliate links** now I’m excited to have another place to write changeable messages! I could see changing up the message to fit seasonal decor, or even special events! This could even be a fun place for the kids to write messages once I print more letters! Please let me know if printable letters are something that you’d like!
All together this project cost me $4, which was the cost of two boards, each cut in half. I had the cardstock and pop tabs on hand already! I hope this post inspires you that oversized art doesn’t need to be fancy or expensive! If you decide to make a DIY letterboard ledge please share it with me!
