Hey Everyone! I’ve been working hard on our mudroom and this week I worked on the built in bench. In our last house I did a floating wood bench and it never felt super sturdy. My husband’s one request was that this one was NOT wall mounted.
I was able to build this using one piece of 4×8′ 3/4″ plywood which was under $30. I assembled it using trim nailer. Then I added trim pieces to the fronts of the boards to help them look more finished. Once it was all assembled I painted it using my paint sprayer. The butcher block top was a remnant from our kitchen counters that I’ve had sitting in my garage. I put a coat of walnut stain on it and then attached it to the top of the bench. Then I secured the entire bench to the walls and studs using screws.
Once the bench was built I used 8″ shiplap, a piece of MDF, and a piece of stained pine to create a hook wall and picture ledge.
Here it is all finished with these gorgeous hooks from D. Lawless hardware. To shop the rest of the mudroom you can click on the images below:
Because I had the butcher block remnant, this entire project came in under $100. I hope that this post showed how simple building a basic piece like this really is! If you’re considering building furniture, a basic bench like this is a great place to start! To see more pictures of this mudroom, head to the reveal post here!

Love how your mudroom is looking! BTW, I just bought the same shoe rack that’s hanging on the wall. I had never seen one before. It’s pretty much the coolest thing ever. Hubby doesn’t agree…
Hi I really love the cabinet color with the wallpaper it looks amazing.
Looks awesome! can’t wait to see what you’re up to next week!
Jess! I love that wall paper on the ceiling!!! It’s amazing! And love those wardrobes, too. The color. The hardware! It is totally working in this space. What a great makeover! So excited for you!
Hi, Jess! I am a Texas transplant living in Northern Minnesota (Grand Marais). We built a mudroom onto our house and I am currently in the process of finishing it out. I am so inspired by your transformation and I am enjoying your posts so much. Nice work!
OH I LOVE Grand Marais! I was born in Duluth and growing up we always had a condo at Lutsen. I miss Sven and Ole’s and Ben Franklin! Thank you so much for commenting! We’ll both be needing our mudrooms very soon with Winter on it’s way!
