Today I’m sharing the FINAL reveal of our kitchen makeover! When we decided to install a bigger window over the kitchen sink, it didn’t leave us with room for the original cabinet. Thankfully I’d love the look of open shelving that so many of my inspiration kitchens have. So, after tiling the backsplash we decided to install Butcher Block Open Kitchen Shelving.
We started with two pieces of Sapele wood with an Ogee edge that I ordered from the Hardwood Lumber Company along with our gorgeous wood island. I just finished them with waterlox while I was doing the island.
The hardest part of this entire project was drilling into our brand new beautiful tile backsplash to mount the brackets. We used these brackets from Home Depot. Seriously, we ate up 8 diamond bits to drill 8 holes… while dipping them in water every few seconds!
Once the brackets were mounted then we attached the butcher block pieces with a screw on each side.
I really wanted our open shelving to be functional for our most used dishes. The shelving and dishes don’t even have a chance to gather dust because these dishes get put up and down multiple times a day.
I love that they’re right above the dishwasher, because it makes unloading it such a quick job.
Because the stainless appliances, white cabinets and white counters are all sort of cold, I think that the wood really warms them up. I also love how the island and shelving tie the whole kitchen together.
Well, the kitchen is officially D-O-N-E! It’s been a huge job, but also has been so worth every step. Now I’m excited to put it to use and do some serious cooking in here!
